In Class MVs

Skrillex – Bangarang

  • Largely disjuncture. About under-privileged kids who rob (?) an ice cream man who appears as a ‘villain’, but by the end they give him a lot of money which they took off a group who had just robbed something. Intertextuality from the Captain Hook-esque hand of the ice cream man at the end and links to the kids being like the ‘Lost Boys’. Additionally the MV matches Skrillex’ misfit image

Gotye – Somebody That I Used to Know

  • Can be seen as both amplification and disjuncture as there is some narrative quality but to me it appears more metaphoric and abstract as opposed to other music videos that are firmly amplification. Lots of close ups, very stylised, you get a sense of who Gotye is as an artist

Iggy Azalea – Fancy

  • Based on ‘Clueless’ which is based on ‘Emma’. Has both narrative and performance and therefore is a good example of amplification. The narrative does not extend to the whole video; there is a vague rivalry between herself and Charlie XCX. The video sells her image. The big performance is at the party.
